Compassion is at the heart of building bridges and fostering connection, but how can we support others without taking on their suffering as our own? This session explores the concept of “empathic distress” and how to practice compassion in a way that is sustainable and healthy.
Have you ever been so angry that your whole body seemed to vibrate? Or so sad that you sobbed uncontrollably? When we relate deeply to others, we sometimes absorb their emotions in ways that can be overwhelming. But true compassionate communities are not built on suffering—they are built on resilience and care. Drawing from Kristin Neff’s concept of “fierce self-compassion,” we will explore strategies for maintaining empathy while regulating our own emotional well-being. Through an introduction to the polyvagal theory, we’ll examine how self-regulation supports both personal balance and deeper connection with others. Together, we’ll discover the power of the pause and learn practical ways to cultivate compassion without burnout.
