Stick Welding 101 (1 Day Class)
April 21 | 9am-5pm | At ISD 166 Industrial Tech Room

Stick Welding 101 is an introductory course designed to teach students the fundamentals of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), commonly known as stick welding. This hands-on course covers everything from basic safety practices to essential welding techniques. Students will learn how to properly set up and operate a stick welder, identify different types of electrodes, and perform various types of welds on steel materials. Through practical exercises and guided instruction, students will gain the skills needed to produce strong, high-quality welds and prepare for more advanced welding techniques. Whether you're a beginner looking to start a career in welding or simply want to learn a valuable trade skill, Stick Welding 101 offers the foundational knowledge needed to succeed in the world of welding.
 
Topics Covered:
• Safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Welding machine setup and maintenance
• Understanding electrodes and selecting the right ones for the job
• Techniques for making various welds, including bead formation, fillet welds, and groove welds
• Troubleshooting common welding issues
• Basic metallurgy and how materials react to heat
 
By the end of the course, students will have gained practical experience and confidence in stick welding, allowing them to pursue further welding education or start applying their skills in various industries.
 
Materials Provided:
• Stick welding machine and equipment
• Safety gear (helmet, gloves, apron)
• Practice material for welding
 
Bring: Please bring clear eye protection-safety glasses (You can purchase them at any of the hardware stores in the county for around 1 dollar) and ear protection - ear plugs or ear muffs (You can purchase soft foam ear plugs at gas stations and also hardware stores in the county for roughly .50 cents.). Bring a container of water to drink throughout the day.  Please make sure to wear closed-toed shoes, a long-sleeved shirt, and jeans. You may want to bring additional layers to take on or off based on the temp in the room.
 
Prepare to dive into the world of Stick welding and gain the confidence to tackle a variety of welding tasks!
 
Tobias Lawson was born and raised in Grand Marais. After High school, he attended Minneapolis College of Art and Design and specialized in metal sculpture. Employed at the Science Museum for over 8 years, he built and installed exhibits for various museums around the country. He has extensive carpentry, welding, and fabrication experience, as well as a keen eye for creative aesthetics. Tobias recently moved back to Cook County to pursue his fire pit business Fireflypits.com. He enjoys exploring trails and back roads on his electric scooter, hiking, and tinkering with various electronics projects.
