Join Extension Forestry Educator, Gary Wyatt to learn the what, why, and how of responsible harvesting and gain an understanding of the biology and ecology of harvested plants.

Minnesota’s forests provide a diversity of natural resources throughout the year. Many of these resources, such as wood, berries, and plants, can be harvested for wreaths, baskets, jam, or…dinner.

We will gather indoors first for some of the workshops and then have people drive to a nearby outdoor spot to do some plant identification. We will not be collecting items during this event to prevent over-harvesting an area.

Who should attend? Anyone who is interested in learning about foraging for plants and fungi that can be eaten or used as decoration.

Please bring with you:

  • Wear/Bring clothing appropriate for May weather – it could be warm, hot, cold, snowy, windy, wet, or buggy. Dress in layers, as we will start with classroom time. Wear footwear fitting the weather.
  • You may also want to bring sunscreen/bug spray.
  • Water bottle or thermos (for drinking out in the field if desired)
  • Transportation to get you to CCHE and to the field site
