Description

Positive Discipline Workshop for Parents and Caregivers
January 24 | 5:30-7:30pm | FREE | Zoom
Presenter: Nancie Deming, Project Leader & Navigator Sawtooth Mountain Clinic Community Hub

Everyone is welcome but the workshop best fits parents & caregivers of children ages birth to age 10.

In this class, we will discuss the characteristics of the Positive Discipline Model while having the opportunity to practice new skills through experiential activities. Nancie Deming, parent educator, project leader for Sawtooth Mountain Clinic’s Early Childhood Resource Hub, and certified Positive Discipline trainer will guide us to focus on solutions instead of problems, identify the child’s beliefs behind their behavior, and practice communication skills in a relationship based on mutual respect. These practices create a secure and consistent environment for the children in our lives which helps them to grow and flourish.

Current research on children and their environments shows we are hardwired from birth to connect with others, and that children who feel a sense of connection to their family, school and community are less likely to misbehave. Positive Discipline focuses on teaching important social and life skills in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and the adults in their lives: parents, teachers, childcare providers and youth workers. Based upon the best-selling book by Dr. Jane Nelsen, Positive Discipline:

  • helps children feel a sense of connection, belonging, and significance
  • is kind and firm at the same time, instead of only punitive or permissive
  • is effective long term, because it considers what the child is thinking, feeling, learning, and deciding about themselves and their world
  • teaches important social and life skills
  • invites children to discover how capable they are.
