Event Details:
There is a power in the stories we read–to connect us with experiences beyond our own. Besides being a relaxing hobby, reading can create space for self-reflection and can also give us an effective way to have real conversations with our families, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Readers of all ages can take part in a community movement to read, learn, talk about, and create social transformation.
Join the community in reading The Cultural Toolbox: Traditional Ojibwe Living in the Modern World during the month of November. We hope that this community read series will equip and inspire our community, both adults and youth, to imagine and create a more inclusive and equitable world. When we as a community read together, we become part of something bigger than ourselves.
Join us for an in-person or zoom book group-book discussion and potluck at Cook County Higher Education. This Community Read is a book club that everyone in the community is welcome to attend!
Book Group Facilitator:
Gwen Danfelt is the manager and book buyer at Drury Lane Books and has participated in book clubs for over 20 years. She has a degree in Cultural Studies & Comparative Literature from the University of Minnesota and has facilitated several local book clubs. When she's not working, canoeing, hiking, or hanging out with her 7-year-old, she's usually reading!
Book Details:
The Cultural Toolbox: Traditional Ojibwe Living in the Modern World by Anton Treuer "tells stories of one Ojibwe family's hunting, gathering, harvesting, and cultural ways and beliefs—without violating protected secrets. Following the four seasons of the year and the four seasons of life, this intimate view of the Ojibwe world reflects a relatable, modern, richly experienced connection to the rest of the planet. It also opens up a new way of understanding these living traditions, which carry thousands of years of cultural knowledge still in the making.
Today's Ojibwe people have maintained a dazzling array of deep, beautiful, adaptive ways of connecting to the spiritual, natural, and human beings around them. Variations in Ojibwe cultural practices are, of course, as diverse as their homelands, which stretch across the Great Lakes, Canadian shield, pine forests, and prairie potholes of four US states and three Canadian provinces. And Ojibwe culture, like every other culture, has changed over time. But these variations and changes have always followed a distinct path, reflecting an identifiably Ojibwe worldview. While the world around, in, and connected to Ojibwe spaces continues to envelop myriad cultures and peoples, the Ojibwe have found a way to stay recognizable to their ancestors. Learn about the traditional practices of one Ojibwe family, carried out through the seasons of the year and across the seasons of life, demonstrating the enduring power of culture and identity."
The Cultural Toolbox: Traditional Ojibwe Living in the Modern World are available at the Grand Marais Public Library and Drury Lane Books, and e-book copies are also available.
